Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify the night duty experience of clinical nurses who are considering job transfer and to develop a substance theory.
Methods: Data were collected using individual in-depth interviews with 14 clinical nurses from general hospitals through a snowball sample method. Interview lasted for 2 to 3 hours for each nurse. All the interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach.
Results: In the process of the study, 126 concepts, 31 subcategories, and 15 categories were produced. The core category of this study was the ‘resisting self-conflict’.
Conclusion: This study presented an opportunity for a reflective introspection regarding the maintenance of identity while exposed to the dangers attributable to night duty of clinical nurses by understanding their experiences. This study will serve as a baseline data for intervention programs which may improve the quality of lives of clinical nurses who consider job transfer.
